While in high school, Tom began dating Priscilla (Pris) and married his sweetheart six years later on Nov. 1, 1957. The Boyds have four children: Vicki, Tim, Bo, and Joanie. Tom and Pris also have 14 grandchildren ranging from 2 months to age 22.

Tom has been in the insurance industry for almost 50 years. He spent a short time with John Hancock before moving on to The Travelers where he was involved in the claims processing department. Tom joined this part of the insurance industry as his kids began to get older because of the flexibility that it afforded his schedule. Tom joined Connecticut Mutual in Jan. 1979 which later merged with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) in 1996. Tom has been a committed student to our industry and holds the CLU, ChFC, CPCU, AEP, and CLTC designations.

Tom joined the Jacksonville Association of Life Underwriters (the former name of our association) and has served as one of its past presidents (1988-89) and received the Heritage Huebner Award for the Jacksonville Chapter. In 1994, NAIFA Jacksonville awarded him the recipient of the CG Snead/JF Bryan III Memorial Award. He has been a NAIFA member for 29 years. He currently serves on the Senior Council. He is a mentor within our association and is our unofficial/official historian.

Tom has attended Beaches United Methodist Church since his childhood. He has taught an adult Sunday School class for over 40 years. He has served as an usher and several boards for the church and was responsible for founding the church’s planned giving program.

Tom was instrumental in founding the Windy Hill Youth Baseball Association at the Windy Hill Elementary School. At one time, he was coaching three different teams at the association, and in 2003, they honored Tom by naming the school’s baseball field, Tom Boyd Field.

Tom, along with Roy Deese and Frank Hunter, helped to form The Beaches Exchange Club on October 1, 1980. He has been the President of the Beaches Exchange Club twice. Recently, the club awarded Tom for his outstanding achievement in recruiting new members. For his efforts, Tom received the first ever presentation of the Roy Deese Membership Award.

The Exchange Club Family Center, jointly formed by the Beaches Exchange Club and the Jacksonville Exchange Club, is dedicated to the prevention of child abuse in Jacksonville. Initially formed in 1992 as First Coast Family Center, the non-profit organization has recently reorganized to focus its efforts on the Parent Aide program, which is a National Exchange Club CAP program.
